When a driver is charged with a moving violation, such as speeding, running a stop sign, or running a red light, they will receive a civil ticket that requires a fine to be paid and points will be assessed to their driver’s license. Civil infractions do not require physical arrest of the driver if the driver signs the traffic citation. By signing the citation, the driver is promising to either pay the fine or appear in court to contest it. Failure of the driver to sign the citation will lead to their arrest.

A criminal traffic violation is much more serious and results in the driver being charged with possible arrest for a misdemeanor or felony charge. Along with an assessment of points.
